Bernedoodles are a hybrid between two pure breeds: Bernese Mountain Dogs (sometimes called Burners) and Poodles. We specialize in breeding F2b mini Bernedoodles. This is a cross between a first generation mini Bernedoodle and a second generation mini Bernedoodle. When breeding is done correctly, this pairing achieves an outcome of the best attributes of both pure bred ancestors. The desired attributes we breed for are; health, size, temperament, coat, and coloring.
The terms used for doodles can be confusing, but tell you a lot about your dog's characteristics. Much can be said on this subject, but here is a simplified breakdown of the main terms and their meanings.
F1 = The number designates which generation the dog is away from its purebred ancestors. A 1 is a first generation cross between two different purebred dogs. For Bernedoodles, this is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle (any size). The dog is 50% Bernese Mountain Dog and 50% Poodle.
F2 = A 2 designates a second generation away from initial crossbreed or hybrid. Any further generations are considered "multigeneration."
F1b = The "b" means back bred. This is when an F1 dog is back bred to one of the original purebreeds. Most often for Bernedoodles, this means breeding an F1 Bernedoodle with a Poodle. The result is an F1b (75% Poodle & 25% Bernese Mountain Dog.
F2b = This is a cross between an F1 Bernedoodle and an F1b Bernedoodle. The result is a dog that is 62.5% Poodle & 37.5% Bernese Mountain Dog. This dog will retain more of the Bernese Mountain Dog characteristics.
There are two types of breeders: Purebred and Designer.
Purebred Breeders focus their breeding programs on retaining the standard qualities and bloodline of a specific, pure breed.
Designer Breeders focus their breeding programs on achieving desired attributes through the hybrid breeding of two or more pure breeds.
We are designer breeders. We breed with certain attributes in mind such as; health, temperament, coat, size and coloring. To do this, we assess the overall health, personality and genetic test results of potential dams and sires. Many attributes are identified by specific genotype sequencing an resulting phenotypes. We identify the specific genotypes and then forecast the potential probability of those phenotypes presenting in the offspring. Then we select the best pairing of quality dogs to ensure offspring that possess these desired results. This can be a bit of a scientific rabbit hole. See Designer Breeding under About Us for more information.

Doodles come in a variety of sizes. It is mainly determined by the size of Poodle used in the breeding. There are four sizes of Poodles; Standard, Medium, Miniature and Toy. We specialize in mini Bernedoodles that result from using either Toy or Miniature Poodles in the breeding. This results in smaller and healthier dog as smaller dogs tend to live longer than large breeds. Expected adult weight for our mini Bernedoodles is between 27-35 lbs.
